Climate change: what impact will it have on access to water?

posted on : 10 May 2023

In 2020, 2.2 billion people still didn’t have access to clean water , i.e. 1 in 3 people according to the UN. As a result of global warming, we are experiencing increasing numbers of natural disasters, which impacts access to water in many parts of the world.

To mark World Water Day 2021, the UN is encouraging people around the world to share their stories and thoughts about what water means to them. These stories will give us a better understanding of how water is valued by different people in different contexts, so that we can safeguard this precious resource for the benefit of all.

With the world’s freshwater resources limited and unevenly distributed, the effects of global warming pose an even greater threat to populations for whom access to water is not a matter of course, but a daily struggle.
